The icing on the cake

By Jenn Novielli

DeKALB | Icing cake, doing killer impersonations and creating unique shapes out of gum wrappers — who does this stuff?

NIU women’s soccer midfielder Thea Johnson, that’s who.

One could only wish to be good at all those and be an incredible soccer player.

But while soccer takes up Johnson’s time, icing is her passion? Then again, can you really call icing cake a passion? Well, if it isn’t, Johnson makes it one.

The sophomore pretty much ices everything. And if you ever need her to do it, Thea said she will be more than happy to.

“I just like it,” Johnson said. “On bus trips, everyone has peanut butter with their bagels and I just ice everyone’s bagels.”

But even Johnson can’t ice every hour of free time away. So instead she also spends time hanging out with her roommates, watching “Grey’s Anatomy” and making shapes out of gum wrappers.

Maybe she could start a new fad — origami, Thea Johnson’s way.

“I just fold them up in strange ways,” Johnson said.

Johnson’s specialty is making rings out of gum wrappers with her roommate and fellow teammate Erin Fahey.

Then there’s her impersonations.

And when it comes to those, no one is safe.

“She impersonates our friends,” said Fahey. “But she does a phenomenal Will Ferrell impression.”

After all, Will Ferrell is Johnson’s favorite actor.

Although Johnson has these funny quirks off the field, she knows when to be focused and maintain her poise.

Her coach, Marci Miller, vouches for her character on the field.

“Thea exhibits what it takes to be a high-quality soccer player,” Miller said. “She maintains her fitness level, work rate and she’s an excellent student. She’s All-American material.”

This should come as no surprise.

From her impersonations, gum wrappers and icing, wouldn’t one think that the sophomore has enough character?
