Sycamore road to get 24-hour White Castle

DeKALB | Move over, Altgeld, there’s a new castle in DeKalb.

Construction will begin this fall on a 24-hour White Castle at 1602 Sycamore Road, across from Big Lots in what used to be Castle Bank.

“Based on the information given, construction should be underway this fall,” said DeKalb City Manager Mark Biernacki.

Economic development director Paul Rasmussen said White Castle has pursued interest in DeKalb because of the city’s expansion.

“White Castle wanted more traffic and city growth before they would come,” Rasmussen said.

Students have mixed feelings about this future development. Junior geology major Jayce Best is a White Castle fan, but doesn’t like the effects their burgers have.

“You can change the ‘freshman 15′ to the ‘freshman 25,'” Best said.

Dan Haswell, post-bachelor chemistry major, sees this restaurant as just another food chain.

“It would have been a bigger deal 20 years ago,” Haswell said. “Not so big now with all the suburban sprawl.”

Senior history major Jennifer Higgins is in favor of White Castle coming.

“It would be nice to have a change instead of the same stuff all the time,” Higgins said.
