Chatting with the other No. 1

DeKALB | Over the weekend, Katie Walsh collected 19 kills to help NIU win two of three matches at the Buckeye Invitational tournament in Columbus, Ohio.

The sophomore middle blocker sat down with the Northern Star to talk about spiking, beach volleyball and sharing a number at NIU with a possible Heisman Trophy candidate.

Northern Star: You play the same position as senior Kate McCullagh. What have you learned from her?

Katie Walsh: She’s a great role model and very, very talented physically. She taught me a lot about the game in general in her natural ability to play.

NS: Have you had a favorite kill in college?

KW: Not one I specifically remember but I like one where I can get on top of it and crush it. One where the whole team can get excited about it.

NS: When you’re playing a team, do you ever think about spiking the ball in the opponent’s face?

KW: Not necessarily. It’s somewhat of a motivation in volleyball in that aggressive way. I’m just looking to score.

NS: There’s been some attempts to start up a pro volleyball league. What do you think of them and do you have any interest in playing?

KW: I think it needs to be given a chance. You have to be a volleyball fan to enjoy it. Pro volleyball is a great thing and I hope it becomes bigger and better like beach volleyball has recently become.

NS: Do you play much beach volleyball?

KW: I play it for fun, not competition. I went and saw a tournament in Chicago. It’s a lot harder physically from running around in the sand.

NS: Is there any coincidence between you and NIU running back Garrett Wolfe wearing the same number?

KW: No, no coincidence. I haven’t thought about it before. My high school and club number is four but I put number one as my second choice.
