Huskies held to win-less weekend

DeKALB | It was a weekend of tight games for the NIU women’s soccer team, but the Huskies couldn’t escape with a win.

Although NIU’s last two confrontations with Wisconsin-Green Bay have been wins, the Huskies battled it out to knot the score at 2-2 in a double-overtime tie Friday.

NIU (1-2-2) dominated UWGB (1-2-1) on the offensive end, out-shooting the Phoenix 24-11, but in the end, the score was the same.

“We were in a non-stop battle for 110 minutes,” said assistant coach Paul Jobson. “We came back twice in the game and had plenty of opportunities.

The Huskies were down 1-0 when NIU’s Karen Enockson hit the back of the net on a free kick to tie the score in the 53rd minute.

The Phoenix answered back with a shot from UWGB’s Stephanie Gross — her second goal of the game.

After the Phoenix reclaimed the score, the Huskies made a late but solid effort. Enockson, once again, tied the score up in the 98th minute with help from freshman Lisa Maier’s turnover. Enockson’s two goals put her on top of the Huskies’ statistics with 4 goals total.

From there, both teams had an opportunity to win but could not muster a tie-breaking goal.

“I am very proud of everyone tonight,” Jobson said. “It was a great team effort and we were hitting on all cylinders.”

Sunday afternoon NIU faced off with in-state rival DePaul.

DePaul had better luck than UWGB as the Blue Demons edged the Huskies 3-2.

Karen Enockson scored her third goal in two games in the sixth minute of the contest. DePaul answered back with two goals of it’s own.

Sara McClard scored her first-career goal off a rebound to tie the game 2-2. Just 30 seconds later DePaul scored once more to put the Huskies away for good.
