NIU drops two MAC games in Ohio

DeKALB | The NIU women’s soccer team had about as much trouble with Ohio teams this weekend as the NIU football team has had in recent seasons.

On Friday, the Huskies fell to last season’s MAC champion, Bowling Green (5-5 overall, 2-0 MAC).

After the loss to the Falcons, the Huskies traveled to Toledo (3-5-2, 2-0) on Sunday to take on the Toledo Rockets, where NIU dropped its second game of the weekend 3-0.

The Huskies played tough defense in the first half, but with just seconds remaining junior defender Danielle Cygan scored to take the 1-0 advantage over the Huskies.

“We played well defensively and had offensive opportunities against Bowling Green, but were unable to find the back of the net,” assistant coach Paul Jobson said. “Their goal at the very end of the first half hurt us and took the momentum away.”

NIU (1-6-2, 0-2) out-shot the Falcons 9-8 but was unsuccessful in getting one in.

Karen Enockson led the Huskies in shots on goal with three.

“It was a good all-around defensive effort for us,” Jobson said. “We had many defensive players with outstanding performances.”

With Toledo’s win on Friday against Western Michigan, it has won its first two league contests for the first time in Rocket history.

UT’s Kirsty Wilson had a pair of goals in the victory against the Huskies. She first scored on a free kick from Suzi Siwinski in the first half and again in the 50th minute off a corner kick from Siwinski.
