DeKALB | A routine complaint of rowdy use of fireworks Sunday morning resulted in an unexpected turn of events for DeKalb police.
Police responded initially to a complaint that some subjects had set off firecrackers on a car. The complainant told police that the people responsible for the firecrackers ran into an apartment building on the 400 block of Normal Road at 4:06 a.m.
According to reports, police arrived shortly thereafter to inspect the car. Finding no damage, police spoke with the occupants of the apartment reported by the complainant.
One of the occupants, Anthony M. Martin, 20, of DeKalb, answered the door and spoke with police.
While speaking with Martin, police saw several glass smoking pipes of a type commonly used to smoke cannabis. According to police reports, Martin admitted to possessing some of the pipes in question.
Police checked the pipes and discovered cannabis residue. Police also located several opened containers of alcohol.
According to police reports, another occupant in the apartment, Ryan S. Thomas, 19, of Crystal Lake, was not cooperative, refusing to pay a mail-in fine for unlawful consumption of alcohol. Police arrested Martin for unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, and Thomas for unlawful consumption of alcohol.
A third occupant, Kevin T. McMullen, 19, of Algonquin, agreed to pay a mail-in fine for unlawful consumption of alcohol and was released.
