Wrestler Hunsinger suspended after fight

An altercation Saturday has led to the suspension of an NIU wrestler.

Derek Hunsinger, 21, of El Paso, Ill. was arrested on four counts of battery and obstructing a peace officer in the 1000 block of Spiros Court.

“The university will determine the next course of action through its Office of Judicial Affairs,” a statement from NIU’s office of media relations said. “Mr. Hunsinger’s status as a student-athlete will be re-evaluated at the conclusion of that process.”

NIU wrestling coach Dave Grant declined to comment on the matter.

Hunsinger took home first place at the UW-Stevens Point Open, and tallied a career-high 15 victories last season.

The 197-pound junior was one of five NIU wrestlers to post double digit wins and single digit losses.
