Asleep at the wheel

DeKALB | Everyone has been bored while waiting in line for fast food, but not many fall asleep at the wheel.

Several cases of intoxicated drivers plagued DeKalb streets over the weekend. One case was particularly excessive but indicative of the wild weekend DeKalb police had to deal with.

DeKalb police responded Sunday at 2:34 a.m. to a call from the drive-through window of Lukulos Restaurant at 1101 W. Lincoln Highway. Employees reported that a driver had passed out at the wheel of a running vehicle, and the running vehicle happened to be idling in front of the drive-through window, police said. Police identified the driver as Karwont Montgomery, 28, of Calumet City, Ill.

After police ordered Montgomery to step out of the vehicle, he put the car in reverse and moved a few feet, according to the DeKalb Police Department’s report. Police then removed Montgomery from the vehicle. The passenger, Darryl Dandridge, 23, of DeKalb, made “furtive movements,” according to the report, and police removed him from the vehicle as well.

It was then that a white, rock-like substance fell out into the street. The substance tested positive as cocaine, police said.

Police arrested Montgomery on the charge of DUI and Dandridge on the charge of unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Police took both to the DeKalb Police Department, where they were charged, processed, bonded and taken to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Official crime statistics for the weekend will be available in Tuesday’s Northern Star.
