Hurd signed by Cowboys

NFL teams weren’t the only ones doing the snubbing on draft day.

The Jacksonville Jaguars told NIU receiver Sam Hurd they would draft him in the fifth round — and they didn’t. He received the same call from the team in the sixth round and got the same treatment.

After seeing the seventh round tick by without his name picked, Hurd got one last call from the Jaguars, only this time he was the one saying no thanks.

The 6-foot-2 San Antonio, Tex. native instead signed a three-year deal for an undisclosed amount of money with the Dallas Cowboys one hour after the draft ended.

“[Jacksonville] called me to tell me they were going to draft me and just didn’t,” Hurd said. “Afterwards I had other calls that offered more money.”

Hurd said the fact that he is a Texas native wasn’t the only reason he signed with the Cowboys.

“The receiving coach has been following up on me,” Hurd said. “He said I’m going to be a part of the receiving core and I’m now going to come in and compete for playing time.”

Hurd’s agent, Ian Greengross, said it can be beneficial for a player to go undrafted and sign as a free agent.

“Sam is a full member of the team with a signed contract, whereas some drafted players are not,” Greengross said. “An undrafted free agent like Sam had a choice of where he wanted to go. There are certain parts that are advantageous to not be drafted.”

Hurd will report to Dallas for mini camp Thursday and continue workouts through the weekend.

Hurd added that his roommate and fellow NIU wide receiver Shatone Powers had been contacted by the Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Rams, but had yet to be signed.

No NIU players were picked in the draft, and no other players could be reached as of press time.
