The latest session of the Student Association Senate came to a close Sunday night.
Albert Nelson, senator from District 1, asked the senate to strike the section in the minutes where they debated the candidates for speaker. He said it would facilitate better relationships between the senators and speaker as well as set a precedent for future meetings. The senate voted against the motion and passed the minutes unchanged.
The resolution to provide consistent vegan options in the residence halls returned from committee.
Carolina Borelli, senator from District 2, asked a proponent of the resolution, Kevin Wagner, senator from District 2, if he could recall how many times he went to the residence halls and did not find a vegan option. He said Eggplant Parmesan was advertised as a vegan option, but had cheese on it.
Senators also said non-vegan students would not lose anything in the process and, according to the Residence Hall Association, costs would be minimal. The resolution passed. The resolution now will proceed to the RHA. If passed there, it could make its way to the Board of Trustees and become permanent.
The senate voted to change how the senate clerk will be paid. Rather than $50 a session, the clerk will now receive an hourly wage of $6.50.
Nelson attempted to amend the bill twice then encouraged the senate not to approve it. He said the senate talks about lack of trust and wants to encourage debate but said people who do are laughed at and ridiculed.
The senators passed a bill to provide funding for Greek security. They allotted $5,000 to hire a private security company for Greek Row.
Active Minds, a non-profit organization whose goal is to provide mental health education, was given recognition.
The induction of the 2006-07 executive officers will take place May 5 in the Holmes Student Center Skyroom.
