NIU students show faith in White Sox

The White Sox are back. After a ten-year drought, the team clinched the American League West Division Monday night.

However, some people still don’t believe the Sox will go all the way and win the World Series.

NIU students, for the most part, knew from the beginning of the season the White Sox would go as far as they have.

“I knew they could come this far. They are a good team and know what they want. They are determined to win it all,” said Cheryl Knight, freshman accounting major and White Sox fan.

Steve Krause, undecided freshman and Cubs fan, said he was optimistic about the season. “They had a real good chance because they didn’t lose any players to free agency.”

“Once they got past the teams that had the potential to go to the Series, I knew they would win the division,” said Steve Hanks, Cubs fan and freshman pre-optometry major.

However, when it comes to possibly winning the World Series, students have different opinions about the Sox.

“They won’t make it to the Series. Toronto has a better team because the Sox are less experienced,” said Warren Wilson, freshman communications major and Cubs fan.

John Sroka, freshman mathematics major and Sox fan, said they can win the World Series because they have the talent. “They picked up some good players and they have a good pitching staff,” Sroka said.

Mark Simmons, sophomore journalism major and Cubs fan, said he feels the Sox can win the World Series, but they will have a challenge.

“Toronto will give the Sox a struggle because the Sox are lacking experience,” Simmons said. “But the Sox have five quality pitchers and anyone can win with Frank Thomas on their team.”

Although there has always been tension between White Sox and Cubs fans, seeing the Sox win the division has turned some Cubs fans into temporary Sox fans.

“I would be happy to see the Sox win the World Series,” Hanks said. “It has been 10 years, so it’s time for another pennant.”
