Sorority for moms celebrates Mother’s Day
May 7, 2006
Mu Omicron Mu hosted its Pre-Mother’s Day event Saturday at the Newman Catholic Student Center.
The sorority, whose members consist of mothers who attend school, have become a support network for one another, said Tiffanie Stuckey, Mu Omicron Mu president and public health promotions senior.
“We watch each other’s kids when we’re in class and at work, and give each other advice on raising kids and other things women go through,â€? Stuckey said.
The event featured a buffet, public speeches, poetry readings and a performance by the youth dance group Mini Rhythm. The sorority passed out awards to their members in categories such as Best Student Mother and Most Supportive Grandmother.
Family and friends attended the event, including the children of Mu Omicron Mu’s members.
“When you first get down here, you don’t see any other young women with children,â€? said Ruevina King, Mu Omicron Mu member and senior special education major. “We still hang out and do the sorority things, but we can have the children involved.â€?
