Recent DeKalb events to air for last time

Set your TiVo. DeKalb will broadcast two recent community events for the last time.

Local DeKalb Channel 14 is generally stagnant as a community information board but has shown taped community events recently because of their relevance.

The final airing of the Sesquicentennial Time Capsule opening is from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The time capsule opening took place on a rainy April 2 afternoon, but citizens overcame the weather to enjoy the long-awaited festivities.

The capsule was full of items from 1956, which are now on display in the DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St.

At Monday’s city council meeting, DeKalb Mayor Frank Van Buer encouraged citizens to participate in the many Sesquicentennial activities planned for this summer.

“We have a variety of activities catering to many different people,” Van Buer said.

The other event to be aired is the community meeting that was held to address DeKalb residents’ concerns about the recent shooting and other gang-related issues. The DeKalb Police Department and DeKalb Community Unit School District #428 hosted the informational meeting.

About 400 citizens attended the meeting held on the evening of April 6 at the Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St.

Upcoming airings of the Informational Citizens meeting on gangs are: 7 p.m. on Sunday; 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday; 7 p.m. on Wednesday; 7 p.m. on Thursday and 2 p.m. on May 6.

“I would like to thank [Information Technology] and city staff. It was great that folks that could not go could watch what happened,” said Fourth Ward Council Member Donna

Gorski.
