Bands battle to benefit business fraternity
April 20, 2006
It’s a rock ‘n’ roll fight to the end at 8 p.m. today at The House Cafe, 263 E. Lincoln Highway, as Delta Sigma Pi hosts its battle of the bands.
A portion of the $6 admission is a donation to Delta Sigma Pi. The fraternity, organized to foster the study of business, is not sponsored by the Student Association and, therefore, is responsible for raising its own funds, said Delta Sigma Pi public relations chair Jim Boguslawski.
The winner receives a $150 cash prize. The winning band will be chosen by the audience.
“After talking to the bands, they felt that was the most fair,” said Delta Sigma Pi fundraising chair Morgan Andrews.
This is the second year for the battle.
To find bands, Andrews posted ads and consulted John Ugolini, booking agent for Kickstand Productions.
“I even went as far as to go to The House Cafe and ask people, ‘Hey, who would you want to see play?'” Andrews said.
The competition will feature Abcent, Enter, Killing Abraham, The Moment and The Killer Apathy. Each band will play about a 30-minute set, Andrews said.
“The bands are of pretty similar genres: a punk, but rock,” Boguslawski said.
The Killer Apathy, based in Rockford, wanted to play the show as soon as it heard about it, said band member Rob Wortham.
“We’re not really there to win, we’re just there to have fun,” Wortham said. “It’s a battle, so we can be ridiculous. We don’t really know this crowd so we’re just going to have fun with it and enjoy it.”
