Help available for sexual assault issues
April 13, 2006
NIU Health Enhancement and Safe Passage have teamed up to call attention to some alarming facts about sexual assault.
Silent Statistics, part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, displayed several poster board signs with sexual assault statistics in the Holmes Student Center’s Diversions Hallway Thursday afternoon.
“We want to make sure students understand there are resources at NIU and in the community to disclose and heal, if they are a survivor or know a survivor,” said Donna Schoenfeld, director of Health Enhancement.
Accompanying the facts were several pamphlets and flyers demonstrating how to cope, who to turn to and how to volunteer to help the cause.
Safe Passage sold green wristbands for $1 reading, “Stop Rape.”
Passersby had different reactions as some just glanced while others looked shocked, said Deanna Phalen, a volunteer from Safe Passage.
Some students who responded to the facts displayed were affected but not surprised.
“It is pretty depressing,” said John Rausch, a junior political science major. “At least they are trying to get the word out.”
NIU’s curriculum has informed some students about the nature of many sexual assaults.
“I’m not shocked by the number of people raped by people they know because that’s a problem.” said Dana Lilly, a senior child development major. “We have talked about that in my abuse class.”
The Silent Statistics display will return for a final display Tuesday at the Stevenson Dining Area from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
