toby keith, ‘white trash with money’
April 12, 2006
After years of successful record sales and No. 1 hits, Toby Keith, one of the biggest names in country music to date, returns with his trashy yet inspiring ways as he continues to produce his “Get Drunk and Be Somebody” style of music.
“White Trash With Money,” the latest release from Keith, which is also the first release under his own record label, is nothing more than a mediocre continuation of “Honkytonk University,” an album that produced several hits but was far from Keith’s best effort. In other words, effort doesn’t appear to be Toby Keith’s biggest concern when making new albums.
The new set of songs, including his new single “Get Drunk and Be Somebody,” are vocally pleasing, but do lack a creative-sounding edge that sets this album apart from the previous album.
This particular problem makes it harder and harder to find hope for future albums, especially when the artist appears to be content with his ability to create a few radio hits, all of which sound the same.
Sure, three or four of the new songs will go on to be potential hits, most likely “Note To Self” and “Crash Here Tonight,” but the rest are, for the lack of a better term, space fillers.
After giving this album a few open-minded listens, it’s hard to call it anything but mediocre.
Toby Keith has worked hard over the years to make his name what it is today, but unfortunately, not every artist will be remembered for their past achievements, especially when they continue to make floundering albums.
