A tale of two fans Cross-campus rivalry
April 12, 2006
The cross-town rivalry of the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs is as old as the teams themselves. However, it is not just the players competing against each other. Fans want to get in on the action, comparing their ball clubs and throwing a few shots at each other along the way.

Why he’s a Cubs fan:
“My grandfather has been a Cubs fan since 1920. My mom and dad started to take me to games when I was three. It’s kind of hard not to be when you’ve been going to Wrigley Field since the age of three.”
What it takes to be a Cubs fan:
“Loyalty. All of the people who decided to root for the Sox last year because they’re a Chicago team, I don’t want them back. If you cheered for the Sox I don’t think you should be allowed in Wrigley this year. That’s how I see it. Stay loyal to the Cubs.”
Best stereotype about Sox fans:
“The best one the Cubs fans have is that all Sox fans are trash balls. The best one the Sox fans give us is the reason they don’t go to the games is that they’re actually working and can’t skip work to go to the games.”

Why he’s a White Sox fan:
“They’re the best team in Chicago. They’ve always been the underdog, and they represent people of southside Chicago.”
What it takes to be a Sox fan:
“Just stay loyal to the team. If you’re going to be a Sox fan, don’t just jump on the bandwagon like a lot of people have done. I hate that. I’ve been a Sox fan all my life. I go to all the games. I buy so much stuff and put so much money into the team and finally they win and it was great, but everyone is taking the glory acting like Sox fans. But, if they have a losing season this year or next year, they’re going to be Cubs fans again. I hate that.”
Best stereotype about Cubs fans:
“They don’t pay attention to the game. They just go there to be seen, just as a day event, and they don’t know what’s going on with the game. They’re usually just fans because of the stadium and their parents.”
