Beat this eruption, Old Faithful

By Kristin Herout

Double the danger, double the fun, double the experimentation to be done. Make a carbonic geyser and explore jet propulsion by building a match rocket.

Both experiments are best conducted outside, as the geyser may reach the ceiling and your rocket will be on fire.

The Northern Star is in no way responsible for any damage inflicted by the following experiments.

Simple Geyser Experiment

Items needed: one two-liter bottle of Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi and a couple Mentos mints.

Step 1 — Quickly drop the mints into the soda.

Step 2 — Stand back and enjoy your geyser.

Tip — For an extra powerful and messy geyser, drill a hole in the bottle cap and use multiple Lifesaver mints. Remember to act quickly as you insert the mints and cap the bottle.

For twice the danger and all the excitement, try this match rocket.

Items needed: One match, one 1/2 by 3/4 inch piece of aluminum foil, one safety pin, one paperclip and a lighter.

Step 1 — Place the match on top of the foil and set the pin on top of the match.

Step 2 — Fold the foil around the head of the match and pin, compressing it tightly. Fold any extra foil around the match.

Step 3 — Remove the pin while preserving its shape in the foil.

Step 4 — Bend the paperclip by pulling the inside loop upward and inserting the end of the paperclip into the foil of the rocket.

Step 5 — Find a safe place to deploy your rocket — it may travel as far as 30 feet. Of course, keep away from all people and flammable objects. Heat the head of the rocket for a few seconds and watch it fly away.
