Local design company Street Knowledge Designs, run by sophomore business marketing major Kyle McGhee, will host its first fashion show at NIU Friday. Titled “Let’s Get Dressed,” the show will feature several designers from as far away as New York and combine hip hop with the runway. The Northern Star talked with the show’s organizers to hear their motivation for the show, why they’re passionate about future fashions and if DeKalb is perfect for this kind of production.
“We want to spice the campus up. Fashion, music, entertainment, it all goes hand in hand.”
— Kyle McGhee
“We all branched off, and since we both come from the same background of entertainment, we have done plenty of shows leading up to the fashion show. We always use both of our resources to make it one big event.”
— Andrew Bonsu
“We’ve been trying to put it together since last spring. Ever since then, [we’ve] been networking with people and taking it from an idea by spitting out different formats on how we want to do it, and taking it to certain people and seeing how it will become something physical, then jumping back on campus through the contacts we gained over summer.”
— Kyle McGhee
“[It’s] a reflection of religion, community service, politics, everyday life, hustling, school, knowledge, books, academics especially and a series of other things. It’s another way to be called fashionably educated.”
