Prospective students visit NIU campus open house

Seeing dozens of high school kids walk around campus today shouldn’t be a surprise.

NIU will host an open house today for prospective students from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Holmes Student Center.

Students and families will park at the Convocation Center and large tour buses will commute them to the student center, said Jennifer Schrumpf, assistant director of admissions.

“Traffic will not necessarily be worse on campus due to the tour buses, but there will be more visitors walking around,” Schrumpf said.

Schrumpf said the goal of the open house is for prospective students to see if NIU is a good fit for them so they can get acquainted with the surroundings.

Different colleges and departments on campus also will have tables set up in the student center for interested students.

Sue Doederlein, associate dean of students for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, said Norm Engstrom, a pre-med adviser, will give a presentation to students interested in pre-med. Many more presentations will also be conducted.

Katie Tegtmeyer, a junior art major, attended an open house before she came to NIU.

“I already knew I was going to come to NIU, but the open house just reinforced NIU was the school I wanted to come to,” Tegtmeyer said.
