The Barn revamps atmosphere, menu
April 27, 2006
The Barn, 1215 Blackhawk Road, is looking to reinvent its atmosphere under new management.
“I don’t think The Barn had the best reputation before,” said kitchen manager Joey Haras. “I think the people that worked here weren’t that happy. It created a lot of negativity.”
The Barn’s new management, Joey Haras, Karrie Kirchmann and Nicky Gochis, hope to achieve a positive environment for employers as well as customers.
The management took over three weeks ago and is set to host a number of new events.
The Barn will host live music Friday nights. Most of the bands that play offered to perform for free just to get their name out there, Haras said.
Thursday nights feature the hot body contest. Customers dance to songs and the audience votes on those with the best rhythm on the dance floor.
There’s “You be the DJ” Tuesday’s where customers can bring in their own music. As well as karaoke nights and DJs to spin the records.
The management also looks to revamp the outside bar with plans to add a tiki roof and murals on the fences. Students from the art department are painting the murals this summer. The best mural is awarded $150 by Red Bull, Haras said.
The menu is also seeing changes. New food recipes are being added. The menu has more of an Italian flair, Haras said.
Graduate student Vinay Ravoola said he goes to The Barn about three times a week for the friendly staff.
“When I go to other bars it’s just not as friendly or personal,” Ravoola said.
Radu Nan, known as DJ Radical Radu, said he feels The Barn’s popularity rests on the location.
“We have the best location possible,” Nan said. “We have the best specials. Everything is going to change. We’re going to make this the best bar in town.”
