DeKalb High School security a step up

DeKalb High School has been at the center of security issues this month, as a result of a shooting death involving two local teenagers.

Following the death of the 19-year-old victim, DHS took several steps to further ensure the safety of students. One major change at the school is that police officers now patrol the hallways in plain clothes.

Now, anyone who’s seen “21 Jump Street” knows that middle-aged law enforcement can hardly pass off as teens. But that’s not the point.

The point is that DeKalb School District officials could have fallen back on the Safety Task Force Committee, which was created in the fall, and not taken proactive steps to further the safety of students. It would have been easy, and cost efficient, to say the STFC was operating at top productivity and that no new steps needed to be taken.

But that wasn’t the case.

Instead, officials took the correct action to offer peace of mind to the students, faculty, staff and their families.

Though some students expressed they never felt unsafe, even before the added security — others did. And given recent events, a little reassurance never hurt anyone.

The STFC has met monthly since its creation and had already planned to make several moves — including the installation of security cameras within the schools — to make sure the security changes don’t fade over time.

Hopefully, these newsworthy security upgrades, along with the changes that were already in store, will keep DeKalb schools out of the news.
