Police conduct search and seize at TJ’s
March 22, 2006
The DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office worked with the DeKalb Police Department to conduct a search and seizure in TJ’s Accessories, 1220 W. Lincoln Highway, on the grounds of the business being a public nuisance.
“We served a search warrant to TJ’s on March 9 and confiscated most of their inventory,” said DeKalb Police Lt. Jim Kayes.
Police confiscated a total of 560 pipes from TJ’s, Kayes said. Nothing else was confiscated from the premises.
The case is pending further investigation by the state’s attorney’s office.
State’s Attorney Ron Matekaitis said he could not comment on the case, but charges are likely to be filed next week.
If TJ’s Accessories is proved in court to be a public nuisance, it could face closure for up to a year, Kayes said.
Stores that sell these pipes have a posture that is opposite of the law, he said.
The courts will decide the fate of pipes in DeKalb.
“If the judge agrees with us, the city wins,” Kayes said. “If not, the store wins.”
