V-ball loses setter
March 7, 2006
After one season, freshman setter Jenny Dziubla decided to leave the NIU volleyball team.
Just before the team left for winter break Dziubla announced to the team that she would be transferring.
“She voluntarily left the team,” Coach Ray Gooden said.
Dziubla was honored this season as she was named to the All-MAC Freshman team. The Elgin native tallied 1,540 assists in her first year of collegiate play.
The setter was a crucial part of the Huskies’ offense. She played in all 128 games during the season. Dziubla was the only freshman to compete in every game.
Dziubla didn’t return calls in regard to this article.
But waiting for a new setter won’t take long. According to NIU Sports Information, former DePaul setter sophomore Mandi Caputo will transfer to NIU for next season.
Volleyball players do not have to sit out a year in order to participate with their new teams unlike other NCAA sports, according to NIU Sports Information.
In her sophomore season Caputo accumulated 856 assists, 228 digs and 29 service aces in 92 games with the Blue Demons.
Caputo won’t have to worry about not knowing anyone here at NIU. Sophomore Laura Baetzel and Caputo played together when they were at Queen of Peace High School.
“[Caputo] and Laura talked about playing together in college,” sophomore outside hitter Amy Ward said. “Now they are going to end up playing with each other.”
