In review the little willies, ‘the little willies’

By Matt Lee

The Little Willies, a group of friends who came together to play some good old American music, recently released its self-titled debut album in the form of cover songs from the old days of country rock.

The group, which includes Grammy award winner Norah Jones and New York City independent musician Richard Julian, took the music they loved, which consist of Willie Nelson, Hank WIlliams, and Kris Kristofferson and covered it in a way that mixes the old style of country music with a slight twist of jazz.

For the most part, this album is nothing more than a typical tribute album, which is obviously what the group was going for. The group’s versions of Nelson’s “I Gotta Get Drunk” and Elvis’ “Love Me,” are far less interesting than the originals, but that’s not to say all of the songs found on the album are just as boring.

The high points of the album come in the group’s three original songs. These songs, which include “Roll On,” “Lou Reed,” and “It’s Not You It’s Me,” make every coinciding note of music and every word from the lips of Jones and Julian that much more meaningful because it’s their own material.

Unfortunately, this album is just not as good as a typical Jones album. Jones has a wonderful voice and the rest of the “Willies” seem talented enough, but taking a talented artist like Jones and reducing her to playing in a band that does American cover songs is a waste of talent.
