Huskies go for third straight

By Lacy Searcy

The magic number for the NIU women’s basketball team is three.

The Huskies will try to extend their road winning and overall winning streak to three games when they visit Bowling Green at 6 p.m. tonight.

NIU may have to play again without leading scorer Stephanie Raymond. The junior is listed as day-to-day with a back contusion.

So far the Huskies (9-11, 5-4) have found points from numerous players. Guards Mary Basic and Jessie Wilcox combined for 34 points against Buffalo while Kristin Wiener put up 16 the next game. Sophomore Whitney Lowe also made her presence felt; coming off the bench to score a career-high 18 points against Miami.

But the Huskies need to be on top of their game in all phases tonight.

Leading the attack for Bowling Green is Ali Mann. The junior guard is seventh in the MAC with 15.1 points per game.

NIU coach Carol Owens knows BG has a balanced attack but has made sure her team always watches where Mann is on the court.

“We plan on limiting Mann’s scoring opportunities by denying her the ball,” Owens said.

Despite the stats and standings of the Falcons, Owens stressed the importance of their game plan.

“Our game plan for Bowling Green is to keep them on their toes by mixing up our defenses,” the first year coach said. “We also have to limit their second chance points by boxing out and rebounding. We have to control the tempo.”
