Sorting through Study Abroad programs, checklist

NIU offers students a chance to study in places outside of the United States.

“Programs are offered in every continent other than Antarctica, or countries with warnings on them,” said Anne Seitzinger, director of the Study Abroad Office.

NIU faculty directed programs take place during summer or Winter Break, but students don’t earn equivalency credit and the variety of courses is more exact.

Provider programs, without NIU faculty, take place year-round and offer a variety of courses. Students have to apply to earn NIU equivalency credit.

In both programs, housing, dining and field trips, amongst other things, are included.

NIU works with 15 approved providers in traveling abroad. These providers offer programs that include anywhere from four to 100 different countries. NIU also offers 20 faculty-directed programs.

The trips range in price and are determined by what is included in the trip and what the trip offers.

“If finances are a problem, the best thing a student can do is come in and meet with our business manager, Pam Rosenberg,” Seitzinger said.

Scholarships and grants are available every year for students to use toward the program of their choice.
