NIU heads to last-place Toledo for rematch

With the MAC tournament only a week away, the NIU women’s basketball team will look to kick off its last three games on a high note.

The Huskies will travel to Toledo for a 6:05 p.m. match up with the Rockets.

The game will be the Huskies’ second meeting with the Rockets this season.

In the first game NIU defeated the Rockets 71-60. NIU guard Stephanie Raymond scored a career-high 27 points.

But despite their efforts last meeting, freshman guard Jessie Wilcox admitted that every game is important for the Huskies and they can’t take the Rockets lightly.

“We have to just execute our offense,” Wilcox said. “We know they got good shooters and good post players. We have been going through their offenses, and I hope we can stop them.”

Coming into the game, the Huskies (10-14 overall, 6-7 MAC) have not played their best basketball, losing three of four games. And in those three games the Huskies turned the ball over 55 times. The Rockets (9-14, 4-9) have lost 5 of 6.

And the one advantage NIU has over the Rockets is rebounding margin.

The Rockets are 11th in rebound margin, while the Huskies are second in the MAC at 4.6 per game.

NIU forward Mary Basic said the team must take it one game at a time because the MAC tournament is not that far away.

“We are trying to focus,” Basic said. “That’s our main concern. We got to do things the right way, especially with the season about to end.”

Against Central Michigan Saturday Kristin Wiener and Raymond had solid performances, scoring 40 of the Huskies’ 68 points in a rout of the Chippewas. In the last three games, Wiener has averaged 17.6 ppg while shooting 58 percent from the field.
