Schools Perform Well

Principal Charlotte Kreuder gave a presentation on Littlejohn Elementary School’s improvement plan which had three major goals: 80 percent or more students meeting or exceeding math and reading standards, English Language Learning students score at or above state level and increased parent involvement.

The Multicultural Committee and Diversity Breakthrough Committee reported 70 teachers trained for instructions for ELL in the classroom. The group selected and integrated multicultural children’s literature across the curriculum. A center is being developed to further aid staff in multicultural literature.

A debate ensued over the upcoming renewal of the Laidlaw contract. Holly Wallace, school board secretary, said she would prefer if the price on the contract could be decreased to be comparable to other school districts. No final decision was made regarding the contract.

The Terra Nova Assessment results were reported, which compares DeKalb students to other students nationwide. Linell Lasswell, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, reported that overall there is a steady academic level for most students, with only a few grades showing a decreasing trend. However, she also said all scores are still well above the national average.
