Punxsutawney Phil predicts long winter

By Colin Leicht

Punxsutawney Phil, plump prophet of Philadelphia and America’s most famous groundhog, predicted six more weeks of winter Thursday morning.

The town of Punxsutawney, Pa. claims to hold the best source of annual weather reports since 1886: if the groundhog sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter.

Phil’s official Web site at Groundhog.org reports that he gets his longevity from “groundhog punch,” which gives seven more years of life with each drink.

Local wildlife potentially could disagree. Roberta Shoaf of the DeKalb County Animal Welfare Shelter in Genoa said if the shelter had any groundhogs, the prediction would be an early spring, as the Thursday morning sky was overcast and gray.

NIU Staff Meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste disagrees with the claim Phil is accurate, although he predicts the next few weeks will become cold.

Sebenste said the weather cannot be predicted by a shadow, “regardless of what the groundhog thinks or does.”
