DMV brings services to campus
January 23, 2006
Students who need to renew a driver’s license but do not have a car on campus are in luck. The Department of Motor Vehicles is coming to them.
A mobile driver’s license unit will visit NIU today from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Diversions Lounge.
“Driving off campus to various driver’s license facilities can be a time-consuming disruption to one’s daily routine,” said Norm Jenkins, associate director of the Holmes Student Center. “We provide an alternative to that.”
Services offered at the facility include acquiring a new or duplicate license or state ID card and vehicle sticker renewal. Valid forms of identification are required for all services.
“I think students will choose to use it because it is more convenient and closer than going to the DMV,” said Aaron Peterson, a junior history major.
The visit can take just minutes if the student has their forms in order and then they can get on with their day, Jenkins said.
This is the second year NIU has been involved in the program and visits are scheduled monthly throughout the rest of the semester.
Though NIU was the first school in Illinois to use this program, the University of Illinois also now uses it.
Some students, however, are unsure of whether they will take advantage of the program or not.
“Depending on the hours, I might use it. But the DMV on Sycamore Road is not that far,” said Lauren Kubasiak, a sophomore kinesiology major.
A complete list of services and acceptable forms of identification can be found at cyberdriveillinois.com. Cash, money orders and checks are accepted.
