The best mobster cuts pop culture caught onto

By Richard Pulfer

Pop culture has always been entranced with the criminal underworld. Here are a few of my prime mobster cuts, each providing a glimpse into the seedy underbelly of America’s true first family.

Mafia Movie: “Goodfellas” opens with an amazing direction from legendary director Martin Scorsese. The ensemble cast includes Ray Liotta as mobster Henry Hill, who dreams of being a made man. Hollywood greats Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci also star.

Mafia Literature: Mario Puzo’s 1969 bestseller provided the source material for “The Godfather.” Although Puzo never envisioned his work as a film trilogy, he went on to write several other mob-related books before his death in 1999.

Mafia Television: “The Sopranos” has defined HBO’s role in the television market, examining both the relationship of a suburban American family and its connection to the larger Mafia. The current season is rumored to be the last.

Mafia Video Games: “Grand Theft Auto 3” This violent video game gives players total freedom within a pixilated metropolis. The main character must complete several missions to advance the story. Players must navigate both Mafia and Yakuza turfs to cross the finish line.

Mafia Comic Books: “Batman/Huntress: Cry for Blood” A former Mafia princess, the Huntress, has become one of the most effective vigilantes in Gotham City. Framed for murder, the Huntress wants vengeance; and she’ll have to go through the police, the mob and Batman to get it. “Cry for Blood” has more on the workings of the Mafia than it does capes and cowls.
