Can’t find a better band this weekend

If you’re wondering what to do in DeKalb this weekend, fear not. There is a diverse array of shows for you to check out, including two Dave Matthews Band tributes, a rocker with a soul-meets-glam sound, an up-and-coming rock-pop group, a Peal Jam tribute, and a party band. If you’re a fan of rock music, this weekend’s shows are for you.

Thursday night at The House Café, 263 E. Lincoln Highway, The Audition, whose single “You’ve Made Us Conscious” debuted on MTV’s TRL last week, will perform.

“Now is the perfect time to see this band before they explode. They are like Silverchair, in the respect that they are all still in high school and have a music video on MTV,” said John Ugolini, booking agent of Kickstand Productions. “The Audition is described as dance-rock-pop, like a Harry Potter novel with pages laced in PCP.”

Friday night will also bring Bobby Conn’s glam-rock show at the House.

“Picture soulful glam-rock that is both over the top and bombastic, yet humbling in its sheer power to make your loins burst into flames,” Ugolini said. “He is such an incredibly soulful musician with such a flair for the performance aspect of live music. You never walk away from a Bobby Conn show feeling like you hadn’t received your money’s worth.”

The House is not the only venue in town to provide DeKalb with a music option. Friday night, Starbusters, 930 Pappas Drive, will host Crash, a Dave Matthews tribute band. According to Crash’s Web site, “Crash can best be described as a five-piece tribute band dedicated to recreating the sound and feel of the Dave Matthews Band.”

Saturday night the high-energy band Modern Day Romeos will take the stage at Starbusters. Both shows start at 10:30 p.m.

Across town in DeKalb Friday night, Otto’s Niteclub, 118 E. Lincoln Highway, gives another shot at hearing Dave Matthews music in the form of the band Trippin’ Billies. The DMB tribute band will play a 21 and over show.

“They’ve really blown up into quite the national act,” said Otto’s general manager Jeremy Eisenberg.

Alive, a tribute to ’90s grunge rock band Peal Jam, will be performing at Otto’s Saturday night.

Einsberg said he is hoping for a big turnout this time around.

“They played here once,” Einsberg said. “We’re hoping they’ll do a little better this time. Alive is definitely a good band.”
