SA confirms new senator, approves four organizations
January 30, 2006
Dion Smith, Campus Activities Board president, was confirmed as an SA senator. Smith said he would like to serve on the finance committee and the public affairs committee. He added he would not vote on either budget as it would be a conflict of interest.
The Black Nurses Student Association was approved as a new organization. The BNSA said their goal will be to increase the number of minority students in the nursing program.
The Dynasty Dance Troupe also was approved as an SA organization. Some argument took place among senators on whether or not the university needed another dance group. Senators said the group would provide students with a greater variety of dance groups on campus.
The DeKalb Church of Christ sparked some controversy. SA advisor Nolan Davis asked senators to find out if the church was affiliated with the International Church of Christ, which is listed as a cult by the FBI. Senators asked what connections they still had with the International Church. The group said any remaining affiliations with the church were friendships only. The DeKalb Church of Christ was denied SA membership.
The Northern Illinois Economics Association and the Student Athletics Advisory Committee also were approved.
