5 Minutes with Kristin Wiener
January 18, 2006
After scoring nine points and pulling down seven rebounds in the NIU women’s basketball team’s victory over Toledo Saturday, the Huskies’ second leading scorer junior forward Kristin Wiener made time to sit down with the Northern Star.
Wiener spoke with the Star about her favorite music, Kevin Garnett and why this year’s NIU squad has what it takes to go to the elusive NCAA tournament in March
Northern Star: What gave you the passion to play basketball?
Kristin Wiener: Growing up, I always played it. I watched my sister play it. My dad played as well, so I got into it watching my sister and I fell into it.
NS: What other sports besides basketball are you talented in?
KW: In high school I played volleyball and softball. I really enjoyed volleyball. I kind of miss it, but when you get to college you have to pick one.
NS: What type of music do you like?
KW: I like everything, I learned to like country and a little bit of rap, but mainly whatever is on the radio.
NS: What is your favorite movie?
KW: Glory Road.
NS: Who is your favorite athlete?
KW: I’m a big Pack fan, so Brett Favre. I’m also from Minnesota, so I like Kevin Garnett.
NS: Who is the funniest person on the team?
KW: Margaret Batteast. She always has something to say that’s pretty humorous.
NS: Who is the hardest person on the team to beat in a one on one?
KW: Stephanie Raymond. She’s hard to play one on one. She’s athletic and a very hard worker.
NS: What will it take for this year’s team to get a bid in the women’s NCCA tournament?
KW: I think we are on a roll right now. This team has what it takes to get in the tournament this year. We have a lot of heart, and we’re hard working. The coaches have a lot of confidence in us. We’re ready for it.
