The Skinny on Smallville
January 23, 2006
Thursday night, Smallville will celebrate its 100th episode and according to the WB, someone in Clark Kent’s life will die.
At the beginning of the fifth season, Clark Kent (Tom Welling) was stripped of his “Superman” powers and later given the opportunity to repossess them by his true father Jor-El. The cost for Clark’s choice to retake his powers, according to Jor-El, would eventually be the death of someone he loved.
This week, the cost will be enforced and it is one of television’s best kept secrets. For most television shows, cast details and spoilers are easily obtainable from the Internet, making it hard to keep the major surprises from being leaked. However, the script for the 100th episode has been tightly guarded and the speculation about which character will turn up dead has loyal Smallville fans talking up a storm.
Although it’s highly unlikely that the show will kill off major characters Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) and Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk), other characters whom have been on the show from the pilot are possible candidates to get the inevitable “axe.”
Two of the show’s stars, according to future show spoilers, have been ruled out as the possible character facing their death. Characters Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack) and Lois Lane (Erica Durance), both of whom are scheduled to appear in future episodes, are highly unlikely to be written out of the show due to the future importance of the characters.
The parents of Clark Kent, Jonathan (John Schneider) and Martha (Annette O’Toole), appear to be the likely candidates to bite the bullet, which reportedly will come in the form of a major auto accident that Clark Kent is unable to prevent.
Jonathan Kent, father of Clark Kent and current Senate candidate, has spent the last few episodes battling the almost villainous Lex Luthor for a bid to be a Kansas Senator. After already devoting an entire episode to the attempted assassination of Schneider’s character, it is highly unlikely the writer’s of Smallville would choose the highly hyped 100th episode to kill off a character that just had a close brush with death.
Another scenario, however very unlikely, could involve the return of Pete Ross (Sam Jones III), a character that left Smallville after the show’s third season. The character of Pete Ross, who has not returned to the show since his departure, could very well return to town, just to go out with a bang.
Although the show doesn’t necessarily follow every aspect of Clark Kent’s life according to DC Comics, it does incorporate most of the important details, meaning that if the writers do decide to kill a major character that is currently living in the comic books, the character will no doubt return from the dead eventually.
The 100th episode, according to advertisements, will not only feature the death of a main character, but will also feature the moment in which Clark Kent reveals all of his secrets to Lana Lang. The scene, set in the wintery Fortress of Solitude, also has the future Superman character kneeling down on one knee, possibly proposing to Lana Lang.
Smallville’s 100th episode airs on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. on the WB.
