Christmas songs keep spirit alive

By Seth Endres

This holiday’s track list comes from the festive mind of Marisa Dourlain, a sophomore textiles, apparel and merchandising major. She has awaited eagerly the Christmas holiday to spend time with her family. Whenever she listens to these songs, it reminds her of Christmas, especially when she was younger and still believed in Santa Claus. To keep the holiday spirit dancing, these are her top 13 holiday songs.

1. “All I Want for Christmas is You” – Mariah Carey.

This song is so great that I could listen to it all year round! I love how it is so catchy and happy.

2. “Feliz Navidad” – José Feliciano.

I don’t even know what they are saying half the time, but it still puts me in the Christmas mood.

3. “Sleigh Ride” – Mitchell Parish and Leroy Anderson.

There was an “SNL” skit with Mary Catherine Gallagher and Whitney Houston where they sang this song and it was the funniest thing I ever saw. Every time I hear this song it makes me laugh really hard and I can’t help but listen to it.

4. “Deck the Halls” – Traditional.

Whenever I hear this song I think of “Christmas Story” when they sing fa-ra-ra-ra-ra instead of fa-la-la-la-la. Plus it is just an awesome song!

5. “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” – Johnny Marks.

What list of favorite Christmas songs would be complete without the most famous of them all? And once you hear it, it is in your head for the rest of the holiday season. I love it!

6. “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer” – Randy Brooks.

I only have one thing to say about this one, it is the ultimate redneck Christmas song.

7. “Christmas is All Around” – Billy Mack.

This is off of the “Love Actually” soundtrack and it is so great. It may not be an actual Christmas song per say, but it gets me in the holiday spirit every time.

8. “The Twelve Days of Christmas” – Traditional.

This song is so great because I can never remember any of the items past five. But it is always fun to make it seem like you know what the last seven presents are.

9. “White Christmas” – Bing Crosby.

Great song to go with a great movie.

10. “Carol of the Bells” – Mykola Leontovych and Peter J. Wilhousky.

It is such a dramatic song that just hits me like a wall every time! After I saw the Rockettes perform it during their Christmas Spectacular, I was hooked.

11. “The Christmas Song” – Mel Torme and Robert Wells.

To me this song embodies everything that Christmas and the holidays are. I can’t help but smile whenever I hear it being played.

12. “Jingle Bells” – James Pierpont.

This is one of the very first Christmas songs that I ever learned, and it is so much fun to sing along to even if I can’t sing at all.

13. “O Christmas Tree” – Traditional.

Every year, holiday season or not, my dad sings this song around the house. If our house could be Christmas every day, it would be! But my mom said, “No.”
