Bouncin’ ’round the Convo

The Convocation Center will be moving and grooving this weekend when Trey Anastasio and 311 come to town.

On Friday night, Anastasio and his new band, the 70 Volt Parade, will play selections from his new release, “Shine.” Anastasio was the former guitarist, vocalist and front man for Phish, the Vermont jam band which existed for 18 years before calling it quits in August 2004.

“This is a unique show because a lot of the time, the day of the show, there are all these VW vans sitting out in your parking lot,” said Kevin Selover, Convocation Center marketing manager.

Tea Leaf Green will open the show at 7:30 p.m. in support of its new album, “Taught to be Proud.”

Tickets for the event are still on sale for $35.50 and are available at all Ticketmaster outlets. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

“Trey ticket sales are doing OK,” Selover said. “Trey hasn’t got a show within a few hundred miles of us, so I thought for sure the people who follow Phish would come from all over. We’re expecting a lot of walk-up sales.”

Sunday night, rock-punk-pop band 311 will play the Convo in support of its latest release, “Don’t Tread on Me.” Most known for its song “Down,” the Omaha, Nebraska-by-way-of-California band will play songs from its 10 albums spanning its 15-year career.

“311 ticket sales are continuing to go well,” Selover said. “It’s definitely a student-dominated show that has a lot of college appeal to it.”

Grasshopper Takeover will open the show at 7:30 p.m. in support of its release “Elephant Dreams.”

Tickets for the event are still on sale for $34 for the general public and $29 for NIU students, with a limit of two. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster outlets. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
