Heating devices should be used carefully

Cold weather has come to DeKalb and some people have begun warming heaters for the winter.
These heating devices might come with safety features, but that still leaves room for operator error.
Models older than 10 years should not be used, said Sycamore Fire Chief William Riddle.
One reason accidents happen is because heaters are poorly maintained, Riddle said. Users should keep in mind the environment the heaters are placed in.
“Give kerosene heaters lots of room and keep them clear of bed spreads,” Riddle said.
Another thing to watch out for is pets, Riddle said. They can kick or knock over standing heaters.
It also is important to have a carbon monoxide detector in rooms with these types of heaters, Riddle said.
“Each tip comes from a tragedy,” Riddle said. “People have burnt their houses down and killed themselves with these auxiliary devices.”
Riddle said he has one space heater in his office and one at home.
“I always use the brand name heaters that come with all the safety features,” Riddle said.
Space and kerosene heaters are not the only devices used to battle the cold.
People have tried to heat the whole apartment with an oven, Riddle said. This is not recommended.
This is the time of year people begin using fireplaces and it’s a good idea to get the chimney swept and checked, Riddle said.
