Bars now allowed to open at 5 a.m. Saturday

For those who were worried, don’t fret, kegs and eggs lives on.
The DeKalb City Council passed a consideration at its meeting Monday allowing class A liquor licence holders to open at 5 a.m. rather than 6 a.m. Saturday.
The Homecoming tradition of early Saturday morning beer and breakfast was preserved with some debate.
“Those who are going to abuse to their own detriment are going to do it at any time,” said Donna Gorski, Fourth Ward council member.
The consideration differed this year by stipulating the establishments must serve food and contact DeKalb Police Chief Bill Feithen if they choose to open early.
There have not been reports of extra problems between 5 and 6 a.m., but police can not account for the trouble caused by an extra hour of drinking that takes place later, Feithen said.
Third Ward Alderman Steve Kapitan proposed a motion to force establishments to serve food.
“My guess is that these people are partying all night,” Kapitan said.
The motion was changed with the hope some food would sober up those who need it. Kapitan’s motion to alter the consideration passed six to one. Second Ward alderman Kris Povlsen voted against it.
Povlsen and Fifth Ward Alderman Pat Conboy voted against the consideration as a whole, although it passed five to two.
“When we say that Homecoming is equated with longer liquor hours,” Povlsen said. “What message are we sending when we do this? Perception is important.”
Povlsen is employed at the Ben Gordon Rehabilitation Center and said he struggled with this issue for years.
“We are almost encouraging an extra hour of drinking,” Conboy said.
He said the more food the better.
“I regret that we have been caught up in one bar issue,” Seventh Ward Alderman James Barr said.
