The Barn, Qdoba dry their taps
September 6, 2005
As of Thursday, The Barn, 1215 Blackhawk Road, is out of commission.
It no longer has the privilege of delivering or selling liquor until an emergency meeting this Wednesday at DeKalb City Hall at 5 p.m.
The City of DeKalb did not renew The Barn’s liquor license because it was not submitted by the Aug. 31 deadline, said DeKalb City Clerk Donna Johnson.
“They did not provide all the required information on the renewal application,” Johnson said.
In order to receive a liquor license or a renewal, applicants must be eligible for renewal and fill out an application each year, Johnson said.
It was shut down at 12:01 a.m. Thursday morning, when last year’s license expired, Johnson said.
Karrie Kirchmann, general manager of The Barn, said the bar may be shut down, but the restaurant is still open.
Despite the shut down, the Barn has already paid the $1,400 fee for license renewal. As Kirchmann talked, she held the receipt in her hand. The shutdown could be temporary, and during Wednesday’s meeting officials will decide if reimbursement is necessary.
Another factor is The Barn had not yet extended its lease from February to August, Kirchmann said. To be eligible for a liquor license, a business must have a lease for the whole year a license is issued.
City Attorney Norma Guess said she called The Barn’s attorney, Irene Bahr, earlier in the week to notify her the liquor license was not going to be renewed unless The Barn met the full requirements of the application.
Another restaurant also was denied a liquor license renewal.
Qdoba Mexican Grill, 2383 Sycamore Road, also failed to provide all the required information for its renewal, Guess said.
