Job seekers find help at NIU
September 6, 2005
Through one of his professors, Dave Dondlinger, a senior mechanical engineering technology major, found out about an on-campus office that helps students find jobs and internships outside NIU.
Career Services helps NIU students and alumni find full-time and part-time employment and internships.
Dondlinger said he wants to improve his interviewing skills.
“I want to find a job that I want to continue to pursue,” he said. “Students don’t realize what kind of resources they have on campus.”
Through the Career Services Web site, students can post resumés and browse through job postings from various companies and firms. As of Friday there were 151 part-time employment postings on the site, 20 of which are in DeKalb, said Kathy Zuidema, employer relations specialist for Career Services.
Currently, 579 alumni and senior full-time positions requiring degrees are posted. Some of these positions are out of state, some even out of the country, Zuidema said.
There are 188 co-op and internship positions available. Another 175 postings are for people without a degree who want a full-time job.
Zuidema said these positions are good for people who simply need a job to pay the bills or for people who are going to school part-time.
Sometimes an applicant can interview for a position on campus when employers come out and conduct a series of individual interviews with promising candidates.
Students interested in a position need to see a career counselor before scheduling an interview. Career Services employs 10 counselors, each with their own speciality.
Zuidema said 72 on-campus interviews have been scheduled, but this number will increase as the Sept. 28 Job Fair nears.
Cortney Das, a senior accountancy major, got an internship through Career Services and is hoping they can also get her a job.
“I like the structure of it,” she said.
Accountancy majors are strongly encouraged to go through Career Services to obtain a job. Zuidema said she wishes other departments had such a “tight link” with the office.
Das admits she does not have the motivation to try to get a job on her own so she is thankful the accountancy department encourages students to use Career Services.
“It’s a nice, easy process,” she said.
