Women split pair
September 5, 2005
It was a tale of two halves on Friday night at Huskie field for the NIU women’s soccer team. NIU launched a furious rally to tie the game, but couldn’t hang on, losing to Wright State in the 83rd minute 3-2.
The first half was all Wright State, as they took a 2-0 lead into the locker room. A different NIU team came out for the second half. A more aggressive NIU attacked the net, and began to frustrate WSU with their determined play.
“I told them at the half that they had a great shot to win this game,” Miller said. “Some of the soccer they played in the second half is the best I’ve seen them play by far.”
NIU (2-1-1-) finally got on the board in the 56th minute. Beth Matus’ shot barely exceeded the grasp of the WSU keeper, and fell softly over the goal line.
A mere three minutes later, Karen Enockson went coast-to-coast, her rifle shot from outside the right penalty box tied the game 2-2.
If at first you don’t succeed, just hope that Carrie Dvorak is playing goalie. The senior keeper was a wall Sunday afternoon, blocking 22 DePaul shots in NIU’s 1-0 victory.
Karen Enockson scored in the 65th minute, her second goal in as many games.
The defense continued their strong play with Alexis Terry and Megan Kolkay matching DePaul’s physical style of play.
