Workshop to hear smoking ban pitch
September 16, 2005
A proposal to ban smoking in public bars and restaurants will take center stage at Monday’s city council workshop.
The DeKalb Smoke Free Coalition, 12 Health Services Drive, and the DeKalb Environmental Commission will present information in support of the proposal, said DeKalb Assistant City Manager Linda Wiggins.
The presentation is not city funded, she said.
After the presentation, the city staff will decide what kind of research to pursue and what direction to take in the matter, Wiggins said.
“At workshops, there is no public input process,” she said. “Commentary from the audience is not taken.”
After Monday night’s meeting, the city council needs to request that an ordinance to ban smoking be placed on the agenda, Wiggins said.
It takes at least one city council member to get the item on the agenda for future city council meetings.
If the item lands on the agenda, there will be a chance for the public to make statements at future city council meetings.
