Bio-chemistry major rocks out, reads
September 14, 2005
When browsing online at Myspace.com, coming across a profile which says, “I like outdoorsy stuff. I’m not afraid of getting a little dirty. I like to fish, camp and go hiking at places like Starved Rock,” the last thing that comes to mind is biochemistry.
“I get to blow stuff up in the chemistry demonstration,” said Samantha Hoffman, a senior biochemistry major and secondary education minor.
Hoffman, a member of the chemistry club, has a radically different side to her outdoors, “Blue Collar comedy” attitude.
“Chemistry is my passion, actually it got started here,” Hoffman said. “I had some really good chemistry professors.”
The chemistry professor that stands out the most in her opinion is Maria Valentine, who is “amazing,” Hoffman said.
Chemistry isn’t the only thing on the senior’s mind. Hoffman is also a fan of going out and having a good time, whether it be at the chemistry club or at a bar.
“I like to go downtown,” Hoffman said, who tries to frequent bars and clubs when she has time. “I like to hang out at Crowbar, which is a lot of fun, or just go to the parties around here.” While partying, Hoffman likes to hang with friends, go dancing, shoot pool and play darts.
Even though chemistry is Hoffman’s passion, it has forced her to make some sacrifices. “Chemistry takes up a lot of my time ” Hoffman said. She is taking analytical and biochemistry courses.
“I don’t have time to read, since I changed my major to chemistry,” Hoffman said.
When she has the time, she enjoy’s anything written by Mary Higgins Clark.
She’s been stuck on the fourth “Harry Potter” book, but plans to finish it before the movie comes out in November.
Hoffman hasn’t always been interested in chemistry, though.
“I was a pre-physical therapy major,” Hoffman said. She is now considering getting her doctorate in pre-physical therapy.
“It wasn’t a big switch because you had to take the chemistry class in order to get into the pre-physical therapy program,” Hoffman said.
While others may struggle with chemistry, the subject comes naturally to Hoffman.
Chemistry hasn’t stopped Hoffman’s other interests, such as music and sports, the main one being football.
“I love football. It’s all I do on Sunday,” Hoffman said.
When she isn’t working on chemistry or updating her fantasy football team, she’s going to concerts and rocking out.
“[I like] Pearl Jam, Linkin Park, the Rolling Stones, the Doors and Pink Floyd,” Hoffman said.
She’s met Fred Durst, “when he wasn’t a jerk,” and is “hoping to go to the 3 Doors Down concert.”
She always gets a good seat from her friendship with a ticket broker. The friendship was so beneficial that she was given Smashing Pumpkin tickets before their last tour.
“I love Myspace and my roommates love it too,” Hoffman said. “I talk to a lot of cool people, though, from Myspace, but they’re usually pretty far away.”
