Dekalb Police arrest suspected rapist
September 21, 2005
A simple DNA test result led DeKalb police to arrest a suspected rapist connected to two separate incidents.
“It takes a couple months for the DNA tests to get done,” DeKalb Police Lt. Jim Kayes said. “But once we identified the suspect we got the results in a couple weeks.”
On Tuesday, DeKalb police detained Alberto Vasquez, 23, a transient, on charges of criminal sexual assault, aggravated criminal sex assault and criminal sexual abuse.
Vasquez was already in DeKalb County jail after being arrested for theft.
“We got the information shortly before he [would have been] released,” Kayes said.
The criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony, and aggravated criminal sexual assault, a Class X felony, are related to an incident that occurred between 3 and 4 a.m. Aug. 18 on the 1000 block of Lincoln Highway, Kayes said.
The victim was a 20-year-old female student attending NIU, Kayes said.
“The first victim was able to give us a description of the guy, which started the case,” Kayes said.
The charge of criminal sexual abuse came out of an incident reported the following night in the same area of a man bothering women, Kayes said.
“The second victim was able to give us a name [of the suspect],” Kayes said.
With the suspect identified, the DNA testing process was expedited and the results showed Vasquez’s DNA matched DNA found on the first victim, Kayes said.
On a similar note, Sycamore police arrested Craig M. Wilson, 36, of Sycamore, on a warrant for six felony counts, ranging from predatory criminal sexual assault of a child to aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
Sycamore police investigators obtained the warrant following an investigation in which Wilson was alleged to have engaged in acts of sexual penetration with a victim under 13 years of age. All six counts allege illegal acts against the same female victim.
Wilson was charged with the following: four counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, a Class X felony; one count of indecent solicitation of a child, a Class 1 felony; and two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a Class 2 felony.
After being unable to post a $20,000 bond, which was 10 percent of the total bond, Wilson was taken to the DeKalb County Jail to await a hearing.
