Just try to beat this geek at television trivia
September 7, 2005
You might be a geek or you might be a celebrity. Paul Goebel, known as the TV Geek from Comedy Central’s “Beat the Geeks” is both. There is a reason why he was chosen to be the TV Geek. He knows his stuff and has a lot of views on television and the entertainment industry. Let us walk together into the mind of a geek. But be careful – you might be educated.
Weekender: How many hours a day do you watch television?
Paul Goebel: On average about six hours a day. I watch everything on TIVO so I skip through the commercials, saving time.
WE: What’s your favorite current TV show?
PG: I like “Boston Legal” and [William] Shatner is really good with James Spader. “Arrested Development” is also good and probably the best show on TV right now.
WE: What are your thoughts on reality TV?
PG: I like reality [television] and I’ve always said there’s two types of TV – good and bad. There’s good reality TV and there’s bad reality TV.
WE: You’ve been in a number of films. Is there one that stands out as a good experience?
PG: Some were more fun than others. “Not Another Teen Movie” was fun in the way I met a lot of people on the set.
WE: Do you like acting?
PG: Yeah, it’s what I’ve been doing since I was a kid. The TV thing was a hobby which turned into a career.
WE: What’s your definition of the word “geek?”
PG: It used to be by definition a sideshow performer. Because of the media, the word geek has been redefined as somebody who is very knowledgeable about a particular subject. In turn, they are so obsessed with the subject that certain aspects of their life suffer, being looks or social life.
WE: Do you keep in touch with the other geeks from the show?
PG: We do keep in touch and we got along very well. We were all very similar but also different. We spent a lot of time on the set of the show and also on the road.
WE: Do you still have all your medals and robe?
PG: When we took the show on tour we had a huge legal hassle with Comedy Central. They said we could not use their logo or the medals.
WE: On your Web site you have a section called “Stump the Geek.” Is there some source you use to get the answers?
PG: People send me questions that I know the answer to. Sometimes I’ll get questions which people don’t know the answer to. To help them find a particular show or actor I do use some resources. I have a large library of books.
WE: Trivia question: In what comedy/drama television series did Joe Pesci and Dean Martin both star in?
PG: That show had Dean Martin as himself and Joe Pesci played a private investigator and it was called “Half Nelson.”
WE: Have you ever thought of being a screen writer?
PG: I have written some stuff and I would like to write for TV. It’s a lot of work to just sit down and write a script.
WE: Is there a particular show you would consider as the greatest television show?
PG: It’s hard to compare dramas next to comedies and it’s even harder to compare shows within a genre. You can’t compare “Seinfeld” with “[The] Dick Van Dyke [Show].” My personal favorite is “Bosom Buddies .”
WE: Any final thoughts on television?
PG: When I was growing up there wasn’t much on TV to watch and no cable. Now there’s so much TV, like, you can watch golf all day. If you can’t find something to watch on TV nowadays, then you are clearly not trying.
