English lover turns underground rapper

Ever wonder if that person you met online was really who they said they were?

With everyone and their mother posting away on sites such as MySpace.com, you’re bound to come across some pretty fantastical profiles. We at Sweeps are getting to the truth behind the creative life interpretations.

MySpace attracts all sorts of people from all walks of life. The site allows users to post profiles, blogs and pictures. It allows people to keep in touch and, in some occasions, create insane digital alter egos. Not everyone on MySpace is lying through their teeth, however.

Don Morton, English graduate student, lists his occupation as an unemployed teacher and an underappreciated rapper. When Morton’s teaching certificate didn’t get him anywhere, he fell back on the underground rap scene where he’s been making a splash. Morton’s profile showcases his dry sense of humor as well as his eclectic music palate.

“Although I can appreciate all forms of music, I only purchase hip hop music and I’m very picky with the ones I do purchase,” Morton said. “Recently, I have been listening to J-Zone, M.F. Doom, Immortal Technique, Earmint, old Raekwon and Leak Brothers.”

From his profile one can link to www.lab-o.com, which features some of Morton’s music under his stage name, and MySpace handle, Elfamail.

Morton got an interesting start in the world of underground rap. He said it all started as a way of teasing others.

“[I started rapping] by making fun of my friends’ mothers back in high school,” Morton said.

Although he doubts if his rap skills will ever do him much good in the teaching world, he isn’t shy about showing off his rhyming skills.

“Do you know anyone else who comes up with awesome polysyllabic rhymes like hobo poop and vocal booth?” Morton asked.

When he’s not on stage or studying to be an E.S.L. teacher, Morton unwinds to the soft, lyrical voices of Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Morton even has an episode transcript posted as a blog.

“Aqua Teen Hunger Force is just funny,” he said. “I’m a combination of Master Shake and Carl.”

So why does Morton keep up with MySpace?

Well, aside from the ability to redesign his page on a whim and keep in touch with distant friends, he usually uses it to meet girls and shamelessly promote himself.

“[MySpace] is free and it stays open after the bars close,” Morton said. “I use it for bothering girls, staying in touch with rapper friends and shameless show promotion.”
