Strike affects Budweiser availability

Teamster Local 673 of Montgomery went on strike against Superior Beverage July 12, and as a result some businesses in DeKalb have suffered a shortage of Budweiser products.

The Budweiser kegs at Pizza Villa, 24 W. Lincoln Highway, have been dry for the past two weeks.

“On average we go through four kegs a month, so about one keg every week, so our customers have suffered a bit due to the strike,” owner John Finn said.

Finn said Pizza Villa received a letter from Budweiser explaining that the company will be in to restock soon. “We are a different kind of business because of our odd hours and that is probably why they have not been in to restock,” Finn said. “And we are a little restaurant so it’s harder for the workers to abide by our hours.”

Liquor stores such as American Liquors of 159 W. Lincoln Highway have not been completely dry on Budweiser products, but the stock has been much thinner than normal.

“They still managed to get it delivered to us because it wasn’t the drivers who went on strike, it was the salesmen and salesmen in merchandising,” store manager Mike Cortese said. “We haven’t run out, but we have been running pretty low,”

Not all businesses in DeKalb have been effected by the Budweiser strike. Molly’s, 1022 W. Lincoln Highway, has managed to keep full stock of all Budweiser products.

“We weren’t not short at all because there were back-up truck drivers that were able to deliver for us. It’s a good thing too because Budweiser products are a big seller here and we go through over 50 kegs monthly,” the manager of Molly’s said.

Superior Beverage has issued letters to businesses apologizing for the inconvenience of the strike and said it will be restocking again shortly.

Superior Beverage Sales Representative Curt Deufel reassured businesses by saying they will have a full stock of Budweiser as soon as the strike situation gets cleared up.

“We have remained in operation and are doing everything we can to service as many customers as we can,” Deufel said.

Superior Beverage declined commment other than to say the strike is now over.
