Classic rock’s Badfinger visits DeKalb
June 13, 2005
Fans from all over the Midwest turned out for Saturday night’s Badfinger concert at Otto’s, 118 E. Lincoln Highway.
Hardcore fans did not let a long drive get in the way of seeing a well-established band in a small-town venue.
Kevin Elwardt of Midlothia drove to DeKalb with his friend from Oklahoma just to see the show.
“Badfinger is an awesome classic rock band and are loyal to their fans,” Elwardt said.
When Otto’s promotions director and talent buyer Nort Johnson informed the owner of Otto’s Badfinger was available for a Chicago performance, the opportunity for the classic rock band did not go unheeded.
“We wanted a big-name venue to get a crowd in here during the summer,” Johnson said.
Badfinger was the first band The Beatles signed to the Apple record label.
Otto’s booked the only Midwest show available to the Chicago market, Johnson said.
Even the local community was pulled out on Saturday to see the concert.
Sycamore resident and first-time patron of Otto’s Tony Padilla waited anxiously on the balcony as Badfinger made their final preparations on stage for their performance.
“I like Badfinger because they have great songs and great guitars,” Padilla said.
Lead singer Joey Molland said he also was very excited to be playing in DeKalb.
Badfinger had toured through DeKalb once during the ‘70s, Molland said.
Molland is the only original remaining member of the band but has been with his current band members for almost 10 years, he said.
“Our songs are about the music. We try to write good songs, strong lyrics and talk to the people,” Molland said.
